Family Ski Holidays 2024/25

Going on a ski holiday with your family is one of the most magical lasting memories you can make. It's also a great way to learn a skill, experience alpine culture and get fit together at the same time.

New for 2024/25 - Cheaper Teen Lift Passes

Several resorts have extended the age brackets for their children's lift passes from 12 to 17, meaning some big savings for families. Val Thorens, Meribel & Courchevel have joined Tignes and Val d'Isere in this scheme to help make skiing more affordable for families with older children. As an example, a full-area 3 Valleys 'adult' (previously ages 13 and up) lift pass purchased in July 2024 was £307, whereas a children's pass was £252. Now that 'children' are qualified as ages 5-17yrs following the policy change in 2024, that £52 saving will make a difference to a lot of families - in some cases for several years.

How to Make Your Family Ski Holiday as Affordable as Possible

  • Look out for family specific accommodation when searching for your holiday. You can filter by family-centric property criteria, and by resorts categorised as ‘good for families’ on our Ski Holiday Search
  • If looking for a ski hotel, shortlist some properties and then browse the room types and look out for ‘family rooms’ which can sleep up to six people in some cases!
  • Booking a catered chalet means you get your flights, transfers, accommodation and food included in the price, which provides magnificent value.
  • Look out for the chalets that have rooms with ‘extra’ beds. Using these 3rd or 4th beds can save a significant amount of money.

For more details of what's included see our Christmas Ski Deals via the main menu.

New Year

Get away for New Year and spend some quality time with the family in a wintery alpine retreat. Like Christmas, there are loads of things going on in ski resorts to help make this ski holiday memorable. Find out more about New Year ski holidays and what is on offer on our New Year Ski Deals page via the main menu.

February Half Term

February half term is historically one of the most popular times to take the whole family skiing. We can't think of a better way to keep the kids entertained and it's a great way to give everyone a break. Historically snow conditions are great and the resorts are in full swing at this time of year. To discover the best ways to get your kids away skiing at half term view our Half Term Ski Deals via the main menu.

Easter

Easter is a popular choice for family ski holidays with fantastic spring weather, longer days and excellent snowfall. Resorts often pull out the stops with Easter celebrations and egg hunts as well as end-of-season parties for everyone. If you're interested to know more about spring skiing, view our Easter Ski Deals via the main menu.

The Best Ski Resorts for Families

We look at the best ski resorts for your family ski holiday based on their ability. Whether you have family members who are just starting out, or maybe they're ready to take on new challenges on the slopes... or maybe they're already overtaking you! Whatever the scenario you want to make sure you choose the right resort for everyone so we've compiled our favourites based on our own personal memories and experiences.

Best Resorts for Beginners

Our top family ski resorts which are great if you have beginners within your family. We have specifically chosen resorts

Alpe D'Huez

An ideal ski resort for families with beginner skiers as Alpe d’Huez offers terrain for all abilities. There are two beginner areas, Rif Nel and Les Jeux, which are great places to get your first taste of skiing with a dozen or so green runs at hand.

La Plagne

La Plagne is a great resort for a family ski holiday as much of the ski area is on a gentle plateau at the top of the resort which offers wide cruising runs, perfect for beginners to cut their teeth on. The resort is made up of 11 villages, although for beginners in the high villages of Belle Plagne and Plagne Centre it may be best to avoid the lower, more challenging runs.

La Rosiere

The nursery slopes in La Rosiere are just a short lift ride from the two main villages. It offers a pleasant alternative to a family ski holiday in the Alps as it is a smaller, quieter resort which can be a preferential option for beginners. It is also an attractive resort with a village charm with well thought of ski schools.

Les Arcs

A really solid choice for a family with beginner skiers, thanks to the four beginner zones (“ski tranquille”) across the resort as well as 10 free beginners lifts too. Les Arcs doesn’t use the green run classification, however many of their blues runs are gentle enough to be greens.

Best Resorts for Intermediates

The 3 Valleys

This is a massive area (encompassing Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thorens) and with over 600kms of piste, there really is something for the whole family thanks to the huge variety a skiing terrain on offer.

Courchevel

Whilst Courchevel is maybe best known for being a high-end and expensive ski resort, it actually has a lot to offer skiers of all abilities. Arguably intermediates are catered for better which means that it is a great place to progress, and if you want to stretch your legs – then there’s the whole of the three valleys to explore. Also, outside of Courchevel 1850, prices aren’t as expensive as you might think.

Meribel

Meribel always looks like a stereotypical alpine ski village; it is a resort which is inherently attractive. The resort has also made of point of being family-friendly and this is evident through the range of ski schools, childcare facilities and general entertainment for children, like specified sledging areas and kid ski areas with Inuit Villages and mini slalom courses.

Val Thorens

Having only a slight bias towards intermediate skiers makes Val Thorens a great place for beginners to progress from the numerous nursery slopes and green runs. It is also the highest resort in the Three Valleys which promises great snow throughout the season. For the family, the longest toboggan run in France is a great option as is the incredible spectacle of the ski instructor’s torchlit descent.

Kids Ski School

Childcare and Private Nanny Services

You are never too young to enjoy a ski holiday! Many of our resorts have local crèche facilities and most have pre-ski school kindergartens.

t4 nanny private childcare in ski resorts

Ski resorts are magical places for children and nannies offer fun, flexible and top-notch childcare. If you're considering booking a nanny for your ski holiday it's well worth booking as far in advance as possible - at the same time as you book your ski holiday ideally - with a reputable provider such as T4 Nanny. The best up-to-date resource for available nanny and childcare services in the resort you're visiting will be the local tourist information office. For peace of mind, ensure the childcare professional you book is CRB checked, first aid trained and comes with glowing references.

What to Consider for Family Ski Holidays

When looking to book your family ski trip, finding the right option can seem daunting with so much choice available. However, with the help of our knowledgeable Ski Specialists, you can have peace of mind, as they’ll be on hand to help you every step of the way. They can help recommend the best ski resort for you, what accommodation will suit your needs and even what level ski lessons you may want.

Here are some of the main things to think about when planning your family ski holiday:

  • Travel Time – Early morning flights and resorts with long transfer times may not be best for little ones. But there are lots of resorts that offer short transfer times which may be the best for your family.
  • Choice of Resort – You should think about the skiing abilities in your family, and go somewhere that also has the right mix of activities off the slopes.
  • Choice of Accommodation – Self-catered apartments give greater access to the slopes (usually), but our ski chalets are a real home-from-home with full-size kitchens and mostly en-suite rooms. So which is best for you?
  • Self Drive Ski Holidays - If you prefer to drive from the UK to the ski resort this is also possible. Our packages include Eurotunnel crossings as well as accommodation.
  • Childcare – Will you need childcare or ski school during your trip?
  • Room Configurations – Will you need family rooms, or are the kids older and require their own space and privacy?
  • Non-Ski Activities - As well as skiing it's nice to visit a resort that also has a great selection of other activities too. This might include tobogganing, snowshoeing, fat biking or just some good old-fashioned apres ski!.

Please note: For chalet holidays, any price reductions apply to the "full" adult price and do not include any supplements such as room or flight supplements. These reductions do not apply to rooms in which children aged 2 - 11 are already enjoying reduced-price places (which are also not combinable with any group discounts). These reductions apply to holidays which include Skiworld charter flights and Skiworld catered chalet accommodation. Free places are limited to one per family. Please read the booking conditions and important information. Infants are children under the age of 2 on the return date of travel and this charge applies provided that no flight, coach or train seat is used and that a cot is used in the resort.
