When should I book a New Year ski holiday?
If you’re aiming to see in the New Year on the slopes, don’t hang about — book early, ideally between
May and September. That’s when you’ll find the best availability on chalets, flights, and the most in-demand resorts.
New Year’s week fills up fast and no one wants to be stuck searching for snow the week before Christmas! Get in early and let the countdown begin to skiing at New Year.
What are the best ski resorts to celebrate New Year?
Looking for snow and a proper party? You’ll want to be in places like
Val d’Isère, Tignes, Val Thorens, or
Les Deux Alpes. These resorts know how to throw a New Year bash — expect fireworks, big après, and powder to match the prosecco.
Prefer something a bit quieter with alpine charm? Resorts like La Rosière and Les Arcs keep things festive without the full-on frenzy. Or why not head stateside for something a bit different? We’ve still got availability in Vail — the biggest ski resort in the USA and the largest single ski mountain in North America. New Year here is next-level: think festive family fun by day, and live music, fireworks, and big-name parties by night.
Will there be snow for New Year ski holidays?
Pretty likely, especially if you head high. Stick to
snow-sure resorts above 1,800m or with glacier access (don't worry, all our chalets tick this box!) for the best snow conditions.
We’ve been doing this for over 40 seasons, and trust us, places like Tignes, Val Thorens and La Plagne deliver the goods when it comes to New Year snow.
Do New Year ski packages include special celebrations or meals?
If you’re in a
catered chalet, absolutely! Your hosts will whip up a festive feast to start the year right. Think fizz, fun, and a big New Year’s Eve dinner without lifting a finger.
Out on the mountain? Many resorts go all out with celebrations — fireworks, DJs, and even torchlit skiing if you're lucky.
Can I find any deals on New Year ski holidays?
Yes — but don’t expect them to hang around. Our
New Year offers include
early-booking deals, group discounts, and the occasional
lift pass promo.
Top tip? Book early to lock in the best prices, and keep your eyes on our deals page for limited-time savings.
Is New Year a good time to take the family skiing?
It’s one of the best. You’re already off work, the kids are off school, and resorts are buzzing with festive fun. Many destinations run special events for families, from fireworks to sledging to ski schools with extra sparkle.
Plus, a snowy New Year beats another soggy UK countdown any day.
What's included in a New Year chalet ski holiday?
It depends on the package you pick but with Skiworld, we like to keep things simple. Our package holidays include your accommodation, flights and transfers plus we can bundle up your lift pass and ski hire too for extra savings of £50 per person. So, whether you’re clinking glasses in a cosy chalet or hitting the slopes on New Year’s Day, everything’s sorted – just turn up and ski.
How does a New Year ski holiday compare to Christmas week?
Christmas week is all about cosy chalet vibes, festive dinners, fairy lights, and time with family. It’s great for groups wanting that classic alpine Christmas with all the trimmings (and plenty of mince pies). Resorts tend to be a little quieter too, especially just before the big day.
New Year’s week, on the other hand, brings the energy. Resorts come alive with fireworks, live music, après parties, and all kinds of mountain celebrations. It’s ideal if you want to see out the year in serious style – and kick off January with fresh snow and fresh turns.
Do ski lifts and shops stay open over New Year's Day?
Yes — although maybe not
everyone will be up early to catch first lifts! Resorts usually run a normal timetable, so you can kick off the year with a few cruisy blues or straight onto the powder if you're feeling fresh.
Shops and bars might open a little later, but you’ll still be able to grab a mountain lunch on the slopes.
What's the weather usually like around New Year in ski resorts?
Cold and snowy, just as you'd hope. Expect crisp mountain air and sub-zero temperatures, perfect for preserving the piste.
It’s proper winter by then, so bring your thermals, layer up, and get ready for great conditions (and plenty of hot chocolate stops).
How can I celebrate New Year's Eve on the mountain?
Oh, there are plenty of ways to see in the New Year, alpine-style.
Picture this: flowing après drinks, fireworks lighting up the peaks, and DJs playing in the snow. Whether you’re partying in a buzzing resort like Val d’Isère, watching torchlit descents in Tignes, or clinking champagne glasses on your chalet balcony — New Year’s Eve in the mountains is something else.
Here’s how you can do it:
-
Join a resort-wide celebration – Most big resorts host open-air parties with fireworks, live music, and countdowns under the stars.
-
Book a catered chalet – Your hosts will lay on a festive dinner with fizz and a few surprises.
-
Go for a moonlight ski – Some resorts offer night skiing or torchlit runs to make it extra special.
-
Keep it low-key – Prefer something quieter? Get the log fire going and enjoy a relaxed evening in your chalet with good food and even better mountain views as the clock strikes midnight.
Big party or small gathering, mountain air makes it magic.
New Year Events

Alternatively enjoy Live music and big-name DJ’s in the après bars (tickets need to be purchased well in advance, particularly for popular venues like Dick’s T Bar)
St Anton
Set in the village centre a laser, music and street party, hosted by St Anton Illuminated. At 11:30pm smoke fills the square, house music starts playing, and lasers beam over-head. A huge countdown welcomes in the New Year and the streets are filled with party goers dancing until the early hours.
St Anton heavily promotes environmental protection so their New Year show is anti-fireworks.
Raffl’s Hotel:
Controversially, Raffl’s ignores St Anton’s environmental no-fireworks policy and usually hosts a large firework show! The display can be seen from any location in St Anton and spectacularly lights up the mountains. Raffl’s New Year’s Eve Party at the St Antonerhof offers a live band, champagne reception with canapés, 7 course dinner, late night snack and private viewing of the fireworks. This is a real treat which costs in the region of €555 per person.
Anthony’s Happy Valley Steakhouse:
The Anthony’s New Year Party has been an institution in St Anton for over 10 years. Starting at 18:30, guests enjoy a 7-course gala menu, before moving up to the Hotel Rooftop at 11:30pm. With great views of the town, enjoy a glass of prosecco and see in the New Year by watching the laser and firework displays. Guests can make their way back down to the bar, to party until the early hours of the morning.
Mooserwirt and Krazy Kangaruh are two of the most famous après ski bars in the world, Mooserwirt is rumoured to serve more beer (per square metre) than any other bar in Austria! Both venues host popular New Year’s Eve events.
