Family ski holidays

A ski holiday with your little ones is one of the most magical memories you can make. It's a chance to learn new skills, experience alpine culture and enjoy the fresh mountain air together.

For many families, choosing a catered chalet with a dedicated chalet host is an excellent option as it removes additional stresses such as organising meals, locating ski school and booking resort transfers.

From snowman building and snowplough turns, to family meals round the dinner table (that you don't have to cook for a change!) and games by the fireplace. A family ski holiday with Skiworld means less hassle and more quality time.

When is the best time to go on a family ski holiday?

Unsure of when to travel? Every week of the season offers a unique atmosphere for families, but for an extra special trip, these are a few of our favourites, each of which falls in line with school holidays:

What are the best ski resorts for families?

Choosing the right resort is one of the most important parts of planning a family ski holiday. Every family is different - you might have complete beginners, children ready for their first blue runs, or confident teenagers already racing ahead of you. Wherever you’re at, you’ll want a resort that caters to every level and keeps the whole family happy.

Best resorts for beginners

  • Alpe d’Huez has two dedicated beginner areas (Rif Nel and Les Jeux) perfect for perfecting first turns, with plenty of gentle green runs to build confidence. The variety of terrain across the resort also means families can progress together at their own pace
  • La Plagne is a brilliant choice for first-time skiers. Much of the ski area sits on a wide, gentle plateau, making it perfect for beginners to find their feet. With 11 villages to choose from, families often prefer Belle Plagne or Plagne Centre, where access to the easier slopes is best
  • Les Arcs is a great option for families with beginners thanks to its four “ski tranquille” zones dedicated to novices, plus 10 free beginner lifts. While the resort skips the green run classification, many of its blue runs are gentle enough to feel like greens, making it easy to progress

Best resorts for intermediates

  • Although Courchevel has a reputation for luxury, it’s actually very family-friendly, especially for intermediates looking to progress. The well-groomed pistes are confidence-boosting, and outside of Courchevel 1850, prices are much more reasonable than you might think
  • Méribelis the picture-perfect Alpine resort, with chocolate-box chalets and a welcoming atmosphere. Families are well catered for with excellent ski schools, dedicated sledging areas, and fun kid-friendly zones like Inuit Villages and mini slalom courses
  • As the highest resort in the Three Valleys, Val Thorens guarantees excellent snow throughout the season. Its broad nursery slopes make it a great place for beginners to progress, while intermediates can roam widely across the valley

Should you book your family into ski school?

For children, ski school is more than just lessons! It’s a chance to make new friends, build confidence and enjoy the mountains in a safe, supervised environment. Many resorts also offer 'learn-to-ski areas or fun zones specifically designed for kids, making those first turns all the more enjoyable.

For adults, whether you’re brushing up on technique or exploring more challenging runs, group lessons and private guiding are available. A ski guide can also take the stress out of navigation, ensuring you get the very best from your time on the slopes.

At Skiworld, we only partner with the very best ski schools in resort. Whether it’s your child’s very first lesson, or you’d like a private guide to show your family the best terrain, we can help. Our ski specialists can recommend the most suitable ski school for your needs and even pre-book lessons before you travel, so everything is organised in advance.

Childcare and private nanny services

t4 nanny private childcare in ski resorts

For extra flexibility, private nanny services are available in many resorts. Companies such as T4 Nanny provide professional, fun and reliable care in the comfort of your chalet or apartment. This gives parents the freedom to enjoy a full day on the slopes, knowing that children are safe, happy and entertained. Because nannies are in high demand during peak weeks, we always recommend booking childcare at the same time as your ski holiday. The local tourist office is also a helpful resource for the most up-to-date childcare options in your chosen resort.

For complete peace of mind, look out for childcare professionals who are DBS/CRB checked, first-aid trained, and highly recommended by other families. That way, you can relax knowing your children are in the very best hands.

What to consider for a family ski holiday

When looking to book your family ski trip, finding the right option can seem daunting with so much choice available. However, with the help of our knowledgeable Ski specialists, you can have peace of mind, as they’ll be on hand to help you every step of the way. They can help recommend the best ski resort for you, what accommodation will suit your needs and even what level ski lessons you may want.

So, what should you consider when booking?

  • Travel time – Early morning flights and resorts with long transfer times may not be best for little ones. But there are lots of resorts that offer short transfer times which may be the best for your family.
  • Choice of resort – You should think about the skiing abilities in your family, and go somewhere that also has the right mix of activities off the slopes.
  • Choice of accommodation – Self-catered apartments give greater access to the slopes (usually), but our ski chalets are a real home-from-home with full-size kitchens and mostly en-suite rooms. So which is best for you?
  • Self-drive ski holidays - If you prefer to drive from the UK to the ski resort this is also possible. Our packages include Eurotunnel crossings as well as accommodation.
  • Childcare – Will you need childcare or ski school during your trip?
  • Room configurations – Will you need family rooms, or are the kids older and require their own space and privacy?
  • Non-ski activities - As well as skiing it's nice to visit a resort that also has a great selection of other activities too. This might include tobogganing, snowshoeing, fat biking or just some good old-fashioned apres ski!
