Starting out as a silver mining town, Aspen has grown into one of the most renowned resorts in the world, known for the spectacular views, Victorian architecture and lively atmosphere. Attracting the rich, the famous and many ski enthusiasts, Aspen is definitely worth a visit. Read on for reasons why this resort should be on your list for your next winter getaway…
1. Amazing Après Scene
The great thing about Aspen après is that it caters for all budgets. With over 50 bars around town and 300 days of Colorado sunshine in a year, you are spoiled for choice.
Many bars have happy hour, where drinks can be as little as $3.50 – Ryno’s or the Red Onion are the best spots for great deals.
For a more extravagant après vibe, check out Cloud Nine on Aspen Highlands Mountain, which exudes wealth as Veuve Clicquot champagne flows freely. If you want to be part of legendary parties, then head to the Ajax Tavern at the base of Aspen Mountain and soak up the lively atmosphere.
2. Ski Four Different Mountains
The four different ski areas include Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk – together known as ‘Aspen Snowmass’.
When you buy your Aspen lift pass, you will have access to all four ski resorts, giving you plenty of terrain to explore. Ideally, all four resorts are located within 20 minutes of each other by shuttle bus, which is a free service.
Each mountain is unique, offering a different experience to all skiers and snowboarders. Aspen Mountain towers over the historical town and is the dream for mogul skiers; Snowmass has the longest lift served vertical rise in the US; Aspen Highlands offers amazing back-country skiing and Buttermilk has terrain good enough to host the winter X- Games every year.
3. Terrific Terrain
The ski area spans more than 5,300 acres with over 335 marked trails and 42 lifts, suiting all abilities. Beginners will head for the gentle runs of Buttermilk. Intermediates will warm up on Snowmass and ramp up the difficulty by heading to Aspen Mountain. Experts will challenge the steep runs on Aspen Mountain then head over to the Highlands, the local’s favourite.

4. Plenty of Powder
Aspen gets around 7.6 metres of snow annually. The high altitude and cold temperatures means the snow stays fresh and dry, even on these bluebird days. In January, temperatures will range between -12 to 2 degrees Celsius.
5. Family Friendly
Aspen is fantastic for families, with so many activities to do both on and off the slopes, as well as family friendly restaurants. There are free sing-a-longs and storytelling every Monday by the campfire, where you can roast marshmallows, drink hot chocolate and get into the real Colorado spirit. Most importantly, there are world class children’s ski schools at all four areas, where they will learn to ski from professionals.
6. Range of Activities
If you need a break from skiing for the day or just want to try something new, there is an abundance of activities.
- Amongst the snow: snowmobile tours, snowshoe tours, evening snowcat rides and sleigh rides.
- Off the slopes: indoor and outdoor ice skating, a sports complex, bowling and hot-air ballooning. Aspen has many diverse shops, including antiques, bookstores, art galleries and exclusive boutiques. You can also visit the spa to relax your muscles and mind.
